Some background info on the people that keep this Pipe Band ticking over.

Pipe Major Chris MacKenzie
Year Joined Band:1997
Favourite Strathaven PB moment: 2009 Tattoo Hebrides
Chris became Pipe Major
after long time PM Ian Tennent stood down in 2007.
Chris's favourite piping moment was practicing in a glen in the Canadian
Rockies and suddenly having a feeling he was being watched. Turning round he
saw a bus load of Japanese tourists taking his photo. Of recent band
performances Chris really enjoyed the performance at the wedding in Stirling Castle. Playing in the great Hall was
a fabulous experience and one that won’t be forgotten. Many believe he
only goes to the practices so that he can go to the pub afterwards. Can often
be seen puffing his way around the roads of Strathaven on his push (he is
more off than on it) bike.

Piper Ian Tennent (former
Pipe Major)
Year Joined Band: 1981
Favourite Strathaven PB moment: Millenium March in Edinburgh.
A long time member of the band (some of the photos on this site even show him
with a black beard!) Ian became PM after Peter Ligget and served as PM for
about fifteen years until standing down in 2007 (to allow more time for the
golf course). Ian is the band comedian
with a joke for every occasion (and we do mean EVERY occasion). Now that Ian
has retired he doesn’t need to fly off to far flung part of the world
on business anymore leaving him more time for the golf course (usually with
John Cox) except when on band duty ..natch. After he stepped down from being
PM of the band he was presented with a picture of the current band and a
practice chanter that had his favourite saying ‘FOXTROT OSCAR’
engraved on it.

|
Piper Dugie Turner.
Year Joined Band: 1981
Favourite Strathaven PB moment:
Another long time member of the band. Dugie originally hails from the lovely
isle of Mull. Despite the pressures of
running his own plant hire business Dugie still makes time to turn out for
the band.

|
Piper John Cox
Year Joined Band: 198?.
Favourite Strathaven PB moment: Marie Curie Massed Bands in Edinburgh.
The ex Pipie's partner in crime on the golf course. John is also a member of
the Strathaven Bowling Club and has also been known to go off sailing for the
week. How he manages to fit in the time for piping is a mystery.

|
Piper David Muircroft
Year Joined Band: 1980.
Favourite Strathaven PB moment:
Davie lives 'just up the road' in Chapelton and is another long time member
of the band who joined after learning with the 1st Blantyre Boy Scouts and a
stint in the Stonehouse PB.

|
Piper Norman Mort
Year Joined Band: 1996.
Favourite Strathaven PB moment: Marie Curie Parade Edinburgh 2000.
Norman is
affectionately known as the 'Late Norman Mort' as he is perpetually running
late. Norman
is also the band Treasurer. He cites the Tartan Day Parade in New York, 2002, as one
of his all time favourite piping experiences.

Piper Alistair Menzies
Year Joined Band: 2003.
Favourite Strathaven PB moment: His first Strathaven Gala Day (2004).
Alistair is the newest member of the pipe core although he is well known to
most of the band through links with the Friends of Scouts band in Cambuslang.
Alistair has the 2004 Strathaven Gala day as his favourite PB
moment......this is surprising as we doubt he can remember much of it !!

Big Scott is the heartbeat of the band. Scott's dedication to the band is shown

the year.
